Monarch Butterflies

Over the past few weeks, the children have been fortunate to observe three teensy-tiny larvae grow into HUGE caterpillars. They ate through so much milkweed that Ms. Gretchen brought some in she found on the roadside. You wouldn't believe how much these creatures consume! Last Friday, we were upset to find that one of the caterpillars had passed away. However, in the same day another caterpillar began "Jaying" and spinning its chrysalis. It happened so quickly too! Within hours it had completely enclosed itself. Now, you can see tiny spots of shimmering yellow appearing over the green. The children are fascinated. By Monday, the second caterpillar had created its chrysalis. Now it's a just waiting game!
