dyeing eggs and feeding worms

It has been too long since we last updated this blog! These pictures were taken during the weeks before and after spring break. The kids in both classes prepared homemade dyes from turmeric, cabbage, onions, and beets to dye eggs. We learned that letting the eggs soak in the dye created a stronger color, and sometimes interesting patterns. Just dipping the eggs produced a more faded color, but it was still interesting to see the subtle differences between them. The kids added oil to the dyes to make the eggs look marbled. It was equally fun for teachers and students!

Ms. Melodie's class has continued to learn all about eggs. They made scrambled eggs for snack last week and a hard-boiled egg peeling and slicing work was added to the shelf. It's a big hit, even among our picky eaters. Ms. Marie's class is still immersed in worm, soil, and compost studies. The school added several new books on the subject to the library, and set up a worm bin in each classroom to show the kids yet another way of processing food and paper waste. They can now see that food can be fed to the chickens to produce eggs, that it can be fed to micro-organisms in our compost piles to create soil, and that it can be fed to worms to make more worms that make humus and even "worm juice" which can be fed to our plants. It's all quite a remarkable cycle!
