This week, in anticipation of our Harvest Party, the kids in both classes learned about many different Mexican traditions. Ms. Marie's class studied Mexico at the end of the last school year, so the majority of their new works revolved around La Guelaguetza, a celebration that dates back hundreds of years and gathers together people from the seven different regions of the state Oaxaca. The celebration honors the God of Maize, Centeotl. Ms. Marie's students made real corn tortillas with a cast iron press. Both classes made Ms. Nicole's Tres Leches cake for the Harvest Party. Ms. Melodie's students have been enjoying playing dress-up with Mexican serapes, sombreros, and dresses. They also made Horchata, a sweet drink made from blended almond milk, spices, and soaked rice. Yum!
