During camp we welcomed beekeeper and photographer Steve McDaniel to the school to teach the kids about honeybees. When we're outside we constantly hear the children screaming "bees! bees! bees!" but never "wasp!" "hornet!" yellow jacket!"
There's a common misconception that all bees are terrible stinging creatures out to get us. But this is absolutely untrue. Honeybees are docile creatures that humans are entirely dependent upon for our food. Did you know a queen bee can lay over her entire body weight in eggs each day? Did you realize that beeswax is created only by the bees that have not yet seen the light of day?
For those of you who are interested in learning more about honeybees and the very critical state of health they are currently in across the world, watch the new documentary Queen of the Sun. If any of our parents would be interested in organizing a community screening of the film here at school, please email the administrative assistant, McKenzie Ditter.
