This year, the children studied the West African Yam Festival. In school they made necklaces of two varieties, beaded masks, and read many books about the festival and harvest traditions from around the world. They also made sweet potato cookies and Zoey's dad, who is from Ghana, came to the school on Friday morning to teach the kids a few words in his native language! That evening, Baile's Drummers came wearing the most beautiful costumes to perform for our families. In honor of the Yam Festival, the kids wore raffia skirts and danced to the music. Parents brought some delicious potluck dishes to share (as usual) and the night proved to be a huge success!
