From Wheat Berries to Bread

(I: "Oh! That's when I stuck my head under the faucet.")

(N: "Should we feed the eggs?")

(D: "It's called a Kramera!"

H: "A Kramera?!"

...wild laughter follows)

(This is what happens sometimes after lunch when you turn your back for thirty seconds... makeshift picnic with soapy, watery, corn kernels swiped from the shelf and dishes nabbed from Ms. Marie's clean pile. Delicious.)

What a busy week we had! The classes each baked a yummy loaf of bread. Ms. Marie's class made yeast bread and were finally convinced that yeast is actually quite alive. When the time came to knead it for a second time, we split the dough in half and the kids were afraid that would make it die. Ms. Melodie's class worked hard to crack and grind their own walnuts for banana bread. The recipe was vegan, so the kids were super excited to be able to lick the batter!

There are some things we never get a chance to photograph in school. The nap room and Friday tea party are two of them. How sweet are those nappers?! They were especially tuckered out today because of the cold weather and bellies full of English muffin pizzas. Two o' clock on Friday is probably the most peaceful time of the whole week!

The children have been loving the new fish tank in Ms. Marie's classroom. We also just got word that Abby's family is going to donate their fish tank to Ms. Melodie's classroom! We are using real plants in the tanks so the kids can learn about aquatic ecosystems. It's incredible how much cleaner the tank stays when plant roots can absorb fish poo!

As you can see, today we felt like narrating a few of the photographs above. One of the funniest things about working with kids is listening to their small talk. It's far from small. These children discuss a whole range of topics, from whether or not cups are supposed to go on the right or left side, or what the difference is between one hundred thousand toys vs. "infinity toys," to whose "mama is a boy." That's three-year-old humor for you!

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. Stay sane with your Thanksgiving shopping!
