Beekeeping

During camp we welcomed beekeeper and photographer Steve McDaniel to the school to teach the kids about honeybees. When we're outside we constantly hear the children screaming "bees! bees! bees!" but never "wasp!" "hornet!" yellow jacket!"

There's a common misconception that all bees are terrible stinging creatures out to get us. But this is absolutely untrue. Honeybees are docile creatures that humans are entirely dependent upon for our food. Did you know a queen bee can lay over her entire body weight in eggs each day? Did you realize that beeswax is created only by the bees that have not yet seen the light of day?

For those of you who are interested in learning more about honeybees and the very critical state of health they are currently in across the world, watch the new documentary Queen of the Sun. Plaster Nature Prints

The kids took a walk around the school to search for items from nature for these neat prints. They poured plaster of Paris into round paper rings and then decorated the insides as they pleased. Some children found dead cicaidas... others found tomatoes... and even more found a variety of pretty leaves.

Our Scarecrow

The kids made the first scarecrow for our garden this summer. Looking for the perfect clothes for him to wear resulted in a mass game of dress-up! The final choice for "Mr. Paul-Steve-Josh the Scarecrow" included a zebra print scarf, several bistro-themed ties, a blue velvet handbag, a black feather Mardi Gras mask, and much, much more ridiculousness!

Save the Sea Lions

Over the summer, we welcomed Ellie to our school to talk to the children about her passion for sea lions and seals. Read more about this passionate young lady here.

Alina Lightchaser's Music Class

Alina Lightchaser is a mother, musician, and children's singer. She came to the school at the end of August to entertain the children with her quirky songs. As soon as she opened her mouth, out came the most beautiful, captivating voice. The kids were completely enthralled, like I've never seen them before. Her repertoire is vast... Pete Seeger, Bob Marley... There are thousands of children's entertainers out there, but Alina has something unique to share. We'll definitely be seeing more of her around here!
