Happy Independence Day!

Fourth of July weeked is upon us and the children are all ready! They have read several books about the meaning of the holiday, discussed different ways of celebrating it, and learned about the Declaration of Independence. They have learned about the origin and symbolism behind the Statue of Liberty and read the verses written on its base (from a sonnet written in 1883). They even learned about its writer, Emma Lazarus. Over the past week the kids learned about the American Flag, made their own flag-themed fans and posters, and created edible Lady Liberty torches from cupcakes, icing, wafers, and ice cream cones. By far, the most entertaining activity was the flag parade!
