Garden Party 2012

Words can not describe the amount of happiness that we felt after this party! Ava Wanas is so blessed with amazing kiddos, mamas and papas, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, alumni, teachers, neighbors... the list could go on and on. Families came out to the school during the two previous weekends to put our playground renovation into action. They built raised garden beds, a wooden garden fence, planted an apple orchard, fixed "Lake Maryland," started building a mud kitchen, and gathered some beautiful tree stumps for climbing. It's because of their help that this year's garden party was the best one yet!

The familes of the soon-to-be-graduated kindergarten students came together and raised enough money to buy dozens of beautiful perennial plants like Rhodedendron, Hydrangea, Ferns, Coral Bells, and Hostas. They also added many plants like Daisies, Pincushions, and Rosemary to the butterfly garden. One of the parents donated a trailer-ful of mulch, and another volunteered to transport it to the school. Ms. Marie is overwhelmed with the amount of teamwork, love, and effort that went into expanding our butterfly and shade garden. The children are going to love the magical space that was created for years and years to come.

The vegetable garden is looking marvelous, with starter plants donated by the father of one of our students. He even helped design the layout for the garden, and made so many suggestions that helped this year's planting turn into something that was easy and organized. Ms. Morgan helped the kids build a very silly scarecrow, who's legs quickly became deflated in a late-night straw-fight. This year was also the first that we held a seedling swap. It went great! So many familes brought vegetable, flower, and herb seedlings to trade. We had some leftovers at the school, but we'll plant them in our pots! We also were lucky to have a family donate a set of nice new tires that were in their barn being unused. The kids are keeping busy by jumping on them and rolling them around.

Thank you so much, Ava Wanas families. The community that you're helping to build is beyond comparison. We are so, so, so lucky!
